The unusually cool summer continued in Southern California, where several new record-low temperatures were recorded on Wednesday. The 68-degree low at Los Angeles International Airport broke the old record low for the day, which was 70 degrees in 1991. Santa Barbara (68) and San Luis Obispo (69) broke records as well. The temperature at USC, 75, tied the record low set in 1999. UCLA also set a record, 56 degrees, according to the National Weather Service. While the region saw a heat wave a few weeks ago, temperatures have been gradually going down again as July comes to an end....

A Covington man has been convicted of an armed robbery in Kenner, in which the businessowner shot two of the would-be assailants, killing one of them. German Alberto Hernandez-Zuniga, 25, a native of Honduras, faces up to 99 years in prison in the Jan. 29 robbery of Dream Communications & More, a wireless phone business that also cashed checks in the 3200 block of Willliams Boulevard. He was shot twice by the business owner, who fatally wounded Angel Armando Hernandez, 34, of New Orleans. The Kenner Police Department and prosecutors determined the shooting was justified. "But for his (the owner's)...

NEW ORLEANS -- The federal administrator of a $20 billion Gulf oil spill compensation fund says the wages earned by people working on BP's cleanup will be deducted from their claims against the company. Kenneth Feinberg told The Associated Press on Sunday the fund is designed to compensate fishermen and others for their lost income. If BP PLC is already paying someone to help skim oil and perform other cleanup work, those wages will be subtracted from the amount they're eligible to claim from the fund.

Drilling industry: Deep water rigs 'virtually gone' by November

Posted by admin / Under La Paz County, Arizona

Industry experts say the latest deep water drilling moratorium issued by the White House has only fanned the flames of discontent by oil companies working in the Gulf. One analyst says there are new predictions on how fast the rigs might be pulling out and leaving the Gulf. Brian Petty with the International Association of Drilling Contractors says we should have a good idea of just how many rigs will be lost by Labor Day. According to Petty, the new so-called "softer" moratorium is actually harder on the industry than the first one

New Orleans indictments further vindicate Bellevue group’s post-Katrina lawsuit

Posted by admin / Under La Paz County, Arizona

Five years ago, in the post-apocalyptic environment that was New Orleans following its devastation by Hurricane Katrina, the Bellevue-based Second Amendment Foundation moved quickly to intervene when local police officials – acting under color of law, but without any warrants, probable cause or true authority under Louisiana statute – announced that in the chaos and anarchy, private citizens would be disarmed. Now, one of the uglier aspects of this disaster has become clear with the indictment of several police officers for the shooting of several unarmed citizens. The police decided to suspend the Second Amendment, for everyone but themselves. It...

DAUPHIN ISLAND, Ala. -- U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder said Wednesday that he would try to address concerns about the oil spill claims process, while indicating that the federal government would help BP find other companies to shoulder costs. Holder said that he would convene a task force of federal and coastal officials for response to a proposed claims protocol sent out by presidentially appointed administrator Ken Feinberg earlier this week. Alabama Attorney General Troy King blasted the proposal in a Tuesday letter, saying it would cut off claims 90 days after the spill is capped and allow just one...

Oil Skimmer Backed by Kevin Costner Ready for Work

PORT FOURCHON, La. -- Kevin Costner added a bit of Hollywood glitz, but it was the bright orange barge full of equipment counted on to scoop oil from the Gulf of Mexico that was the real star Thursday. The Ella G, once an offshore supply barge, has been refitted to skim and separate oil spilling from BP PLC's blown-out well, making for a more efficient way to remove petroleum from the Gulf waters. It set sail for the first time Thursday. "I know a lot of times you have been down on the ground and stayed down," Costner told workers...

Gun Control Advocates Decry Louisiana's New Law Allowing Churchgoers to Pack Heat(LA)

Friday 30th of July 2010 11:02:09 AM
Posted by admin / Under La Paz County, Arizona

Gun control supporters are up in arms over Louisiana's new law allowing churchgoers to pack heat along with their Bibles. Gov. Bobby Jindal gave his blessing this week to churches, synagogues and mosques to allow concealed handguns on their premises, overturning a state ban. "The governor's position on the Second Amendment is not new," Jindal spokesman Kyle Plotkin said in a written statement to FoxNews.com. "He sides with the constitutional rights of law-abiding gun owners." Supporters of the measure say it can be a deterrent against criminal activity in church and will give an option to ministers and pastors to...
